Prayer is much more than just a laundry list of requests placed before God. As we look at Matthew 6 maybe Jesus was asking us to "Shift" our focus from ourselves to God. Once the focus is on God, our prayers will look different. We'll not only cooperate with his plan but it'll change our perspective in what we ask for.
